Nounconscription
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Conscription (also known as "The Draft", the "Call-up" or "National service") is a general term for involuntary labor demanded by an established authority. It is most often used in the specific sense of government policies that require citizens to serve in the armed forces. It is known by various names — for example, the most recent conscription program in the United States was known colloquially as "the draft". Many nations do not maintain conscription forces, instead relying on a volunteer or professional military most of the time, although many of these countries still reserve the possibility of conscription for wartime and during times of crises. Referring to compulsory service in the armed forces, the term "conscription" has two main meanings:
The term "conscription" refers only to the mandatory service; thus, those undergoing conscription are known as "conscripts" or "selectee" in the United States (from the Selective Service System or the Selective Service Initiative announced in 2004). In the U.S. the term "enlisted" is often used to refer only to those who have volunteered for service in roles other than as commissioned officers. GNU Free Documentation License Would George Washington Have approved of conscription? Q. If our founding fathers could look back at all the things that have happend since their deaths their would have been many things they would have liked and disliked about the country. But one thing I am not sure of is conscription (the millitary draft). After all Washingtons army did experience extreme troop shortages and conscription eliminated that problem but it can also be conciderd a violation of civil liberties which is what Washington was fighting agenst. So do you think Washington would have approved of conscription or not and why? Asked by E S - Wed Feb 20 13:09:23 2008 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments A. Not at all. Citizens had rights as well as duties, and one of the duties was to provide and participate in the common defense of the nation. He knew about mercenary soldiers, having fought against Germans in the hire of the British; he knew well the professoinal soldiers serving the Crown. Free men would fight best in defense of their family, property, and honor. He endorsed the 2nd Amendment, the right of citizens to bear arms, because an armed populace was the best defense. The first national conscription occurred in France under Napoleon just after he stepped down from the presidency.
